When we talk about Turkish citizenship, we can find many positive aspects that highlight a rich cultural history and ancient traditions, however we cannot ignore the fact that there are some negative aspects that may result from obtaining Turkish citizenship and it is not an attack on the Turkish identity itself, but an attempt to look at some of the challenges or negatives that individuals with Turkish citizenship may face, so let's learn about these negatives through today's blog.

Learn about the negative aspects of Turkish citizenship

1. Added nationality restrictions: In some countries, it is prohibited to obtain an additional nationality in addition to the original nationality of the citizen, as for example, in Kuwait, the acquisition of a Turkish nationality or any other nationality by a citizen leads to the withdrawal of his nationality based on a decision issued by the Kuwaiti Parliament and this approach is also followed by some other countries in the world.

2. Military service: Turkish law stipulates that any foreign person who obtains Turkish citizenship before reaching the age of 21 is obligated to perform compulsory military service for a period of 6 months or pay an allowance of 31,000 Turkish liras and these requirements also include the (male) children of investors who, along with their families, obtain Turkish citizenship, especially if they are under 18 years old.

3. Respect for laws and obligations: Carrying Turkish citizenship requires individuals to respect and abide by the laws of the state, especially with regard to anti-terrorism laws and not to participate directly or indirectly with countries or organizations hostile to Turkey and individuals must realize that obtaining Turkish citizenship does not give them unlimited freedom in their actions, but rather they must respect the sovereignty of the state and its systems.

4. Permit for military service abroad: The holder of Turkish citizenship may not perform military service in another country or join any fighting group, even in the case of joining a friendly country, without obtaining official approval from the Turkish Ministry of Interior or the relevant government agencies.

5. Restrictions on obtaining citizenship: Turkish citizenship is not granted to more than one wife, and adult children, fathers, mothers, or siblings are not entitled to obtain Turkish citizenship and although Turkish law grants Turkish citizenship to the investor, his wife and children under the age of 18, it requires the investor to choose his first wife and is not allowed to naturalize additional wives.
